How do you draw something this large?

Lugia is mostly the space around it.

Lugia has a scale problem, and the cards know it. To make one creature feel enormous, an illustrator can’t just draw it big — the frame is the same size for every Pokémon. Instead they give Lugia room: a wide pale sky, an open sea, a storm with nothing else in it, the wingtips pushed almost to the edges with air to spare. The body is large, but the real subject is the emptiness around it — distance, atmosphere, and silence doing the work that size alone cannot. This guide follows that one problem across twenty-five years.

How scale is made

Three ways the cards make one body feel enormous.

Give it room
The simplest tool is empty space. Push the wingtips near the edges, leave the rest as sky or sea, and the creature reads as too big for the frame — the margin is doing the work the drawing alone cannot.
Nothing to measure against
Lugia is rarely given a tree, a building, or a ground line. Without a familiar object for scale, the eye has no ceiling on how large it might be — the absence of reference is itself the effect.
Atmosphere over action
Distance, haze, weather, and light carry these cards more than poses do. Even the dramatic ones win their scale from the pressure of an open sky, not from the size of the gesture — silence, not spectacle.
